1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. Persepolis (2007) is a movie about Marjane Satrapi depicting her childhood up to her early adulthood in Iran before during and after the Islamic Revolution. The title referring to the ancient Persian Empire, Persepolis. The themes of grief and coming of age were in this movie and in class we discussed the importance of the animation and the choice of narrator being in French and not her native tongue. Although Satrapi presented this film at French film festivals it still was an interesting choice to make.  2)  Find a related article and summarize the content. https://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/25/movies/25pers.html in 2007 NY TIMES did a movie analysis 3) Apply the article to the film screened in class. Tsotsi (2006)

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. We recently watched,  Tsotsi  (2006) directed by Gavin Hood, a movie about a South African misguided young man who lives by a code of violence. While he gets into a fall with his gang members he casually shoots a woman, steals her car and her baby in the mist of it all. In class we talked about the cinematic style that was used in the film and different ways to story-telling. During the start of the film the character was dressed in dark clothes and was shadowed by his anger and mischievous ways. But after realizing his trauma and confronting it he soon was not only able to open up physically with his mouth and expressive ways but the camera and cinematography seemed to falter him as well, brightening up moving more to his perspective instead of the audience being passive views, we are not active participants in his lives and decision making.  2)  Find a related article and sum...

Not One Less (1999)

          1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening. In our own time we watched a film by Zhang Yimou,  Not One Less (1999) , a movie taking place after The Republic of China had been established. In a poor village, a teacher goes away for a month and leaves a girl who is barely literate in charge of his place and all of his students. She decides to follow every one of his instructions and uphold her promise of not losing a child. It is a touching story with a satisfying ending, showing the disparities of the urban-rural divide just by what the village school got in terms of teaching equipment. It was important to keep in mind the time period that this movie was told in and the circumstances the protagonist had to go through to fulfill her promise.  2)  Find a related article and summarize the content. https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/not-one-less-2000 this article analysis the film along with pr...

Cinema Paradiso (1988)

Image
1)    Relate what was discussed in class of the test to the screening:   Young Salvatore Di Vita aka Toto escapes life and his war-torn village in Sicilia through cinema especially Cinema Paradiso movie house. Cinema Paradiso (1988) takes place in Italy and follows the life of a boy and his love for cinema. This can essentially be called a coming of age movie without the usual tropes of coming of age movies.   Giuseppe Tornatore works well with casting and storytelling without the use of flashback even in moments that the audience did not see, we still know what happened in that moment and get an idea of how Toto grew up and where he is now. 2)    Find a related article to the film screened in class: References LAW, S. Talk to Her (2002)

Image
1)    Relate what was discussed in class of the test to the screening:   This week we watched a film by director Pedro Almodóvar called Talk to Her (2002), A male nurse, Benigno, becoming infatuated with a stranger that he has been watching for a while. Fate has brought her to his hospital and he was set to take care of her, but at what cost? The other half of the plot features a female bullfighter hoe gets wounded and is brought into the same hospital as the injured dancer. This moves help foster the connection between these two men, Benigno and Marco, the bullfighters companion. Roger Ebert from RogerEbert.com describes Talk to Her as having multiple plot points and tones ranging from soap opera to tragedy even maybe a love story in the beginning. Unspeakably sad things happen towards the end of the film, similar to how the play at the beginning of the play unfolds as that too is a story not only the movie audience is following along to but we are as well seei...
