Talk to Her (2002)

Relate
what was discussed in class of the test to the screening:
This week we watched a film by
director Pedro Almodóvar called Talk to
Her (2002),
A male nurse, Benigno, becoming infatuated with a stranger that he has been
watching for a while. Fate has brought her to his hospital and he was set to
take care of her, but at what cost? The other half of the plot features a
female bullfighter hoe gets wounded and is brought into the same hospital as the injured
dancer. This moves help foster the connection between these two men, Benigno and Marco, the
bullfighters companion. Roger Ebert from RogerEbert.com describes Talk to Her as having multiple plot
points and tones ranging from soap opera to tragedy even maybe a love story in the
beginning. Unspeakably sad things happen towards the end of the film, similar
to how the play at the beginning of the play unfolds as that too is a story not
only the movie audience is following along to but we are as well seeing both tragedies
take place on screen and stage.

Almodovar
is a director known for working with women, yet it is men who are the focus according
to the Guardian. The movie poster alone looks to be
about the two women, and although the movie is about the women it is from the
men’s views and gaze. The male gaze heavily present in this movie gives the perception
that this movie is only female centered to move the plot forward by masking the
women as the main focus of the movie. One could argue that without the women
the movie would be nothing, but that is similar to saying without a mannequin
the clothes would not look good. The idea of objectifying women for the gain of
explaining crisis can confuse and turn off an audience. The article sums up the
analysis by saying that the movie is more persuasive than overpraised and
should be looked at more critically then for face value. And I agree. The movie
with all its flaws was meant to be like that and not to be romanticized as the
main characters tended to romanticizing everything and everyone. The infatuation
Mario has for the bullfighter left immediately as It came, but in
realty he was mourning, not only his would be love, but the past they had through
flashbacks and sleepless nights dreaming about her. All while the sad reality
was his life turned into chasing a man who had raped a women and being the only one on his
side.

Write
a critical analysis of the film:
Overall I thought
the movie was a well shot movie with a lot of moving parts that together made
for an interesting watch. I did not thoroughly enjoy it for obvious reasons, with moral and storylines, but I will say cinematically I can appreciate it. The
shots were well done and the metaphors were executed properly. I have never
seen anything from this director before but, Almodovar’s standards, I can tell
from this production are very high and his movies are filled with themes and
messages for the audience to reflect onto society. This movie can get very dark very quick, from a lighthearted maybe cute movie about a man who cares too much for his job and this girl.
To a rapist who killed himself before he can serve his time YUCK!
