Persepolis (2007)
1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
Persepolis (2007) is a movie about Marjane Satrapi depicting her childhood up to her early adulthood in Iran before during and after the Islamic Revolution. The title referring to the ancient Persian Empire, Persepolis. The themes of grief and coming of age were in this movie and in class we discussed the importance of the animation and the choice of narrator being in French and not her native tongue. Although Satrapi presented this film at French film festivals it still was an interesting choice to make.
2) Find a related article and summarize the content.
3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.
The article talking about the film takes some points from the novel, for example: The novel begins with Marjane telling about when she was first forced to wear a veil in school and girls and boys were separated. Throughout her life, she tells the reader about constraints placed on women in Iran, and she as well as her mother break many of those standards and regulations. In the movie that is shown as well but not as focused as they would allow in a 500-page book. The general ideas the article was trying to covey was that Persepolisis by far a simple story even though the animation is simple and non-threatening the messages that are in the movie are deep and difficult at times to digest.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.
I personally liked the movie, I remember seeing this film in highs school and now again in college and still I enjoyed this cinema. There are numerous themes that one could draw from this movie that were also in the graphic text largely highlighting Iran vs. the rest of the world. Through the story of Marjane's life, the audience receives a new perspective on Iran as she attempts to discard many of the stereotypes that may have been previously attached to Iran and the people within it while also seeking more Western ideals and love interest.
