Not One Less (1999)

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
In our own time we watched a film by Zhang Yimou, Not One Less (1999), a movie taking place after The Republic of China had been established. In a poor village, a teacher goes away for a month and leaves a girl who is barely literate in charge of his place and all of his students. She decides to follow every one of his instructions and uphold her promise of not losing a child. It is a touching story with a satisfying ending, showing the disparities of the urban-rural divide just by what the village school got in terms of teaching equipment. It was important to keep in mind the time period that this movie was told in and the circumstances the protagonist had to go through to fulfill her promise.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.
this article analysis the film along with production.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.
the article stresses that none of the actors are professionals but local people playing characters using their own names. it continues to talk about how the scenes are done so well and delivered in a way that does not explicitly say what the movie was about. This, I noticed, for a very long time in the movie I was confused, but intrigued. When talking about production level, for Chinese cinema was not the best but it felt real and natural making the characters and the scenes sell even more. The article says that the Chinese audience will love this film and they would relate to it as a ‘human drama’ something everyone can relate to but still good enough for the big screen.

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.
The movie had a lot of heart and intimate moments between the substitute teacher and her students. The term ‘not on less’ is very important, not just culturally but for plot and purposes. I enjoyed this film, it made me cry and I do not cry often with films. I felt like there were not true villains in the movie and this was very everyday activities, but the story was amazing and the production, especially when knowing they did not have much to work with, was amazing.
