Not One Less (1999)

In our own time we watched a film by Zhang Yimou, Not One Less (1999) , a movie taking place after The Republic of China had been established. In a poor village, a teacher goes away for a month and leaves a girl who is barely literate in charge of his place and all of his students. She decides to follow every one of his instructions and uphold her promise of not losing a child. It is a touching story with a satisfying ending, showing the disparities of the urban-rural divide just by what the village school got in terms of teaching equipment.
